DAD'S STORY

Told to me, Arvilla, first child of Herbert and Arvilla Bernice, in November
1959. He said, "My father, George Philip Sanders, born 31 March 1859, in
Bells River, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and my mother, Minnie Ada Ketcham,
born 26 May 1864, in Maspeth, Long Island, New York, were married 25 January
1886. They met in Long Island where my father was working for the Long Island
railroad, as a carpenter foreman.

I'm the fourth of five children: three sisters, Genevieve Agnes, born 28
September 1887; Edith Rundell, born 7 November 1888; Minnie Ketcham, born 8
November 1890. I, Herbert Joshua Sanders, was born 26 July 1893, and my
brother, George Philip, was born 27 July 1894.

My father was raised by his oldest brother, Joseph, his parents having died
when he was small. My father was 6 feet 2 inches tall in his stocking feet,
very handsome and kind. He was raised on a farm till a young man, then
learned the wheelwright and carpenters trade. My father was killed in a
railroad accident when he was thirty-two and I was only two years old.

My mother was tall, 5 feet 10 inches, and very pretty. She had dark brown
eyes and dark hair, so loving and kind. She was a nurse. All her friends and
neighbors knew what a wonderful nurse she was. She was the best cook in the
world.

Mother married Franklin Green Powers when I was five. When I was small, six
to ten years old, we traveled all over the East going to race tracks. Race
tracks was "Pop's" business. I went to Coney Island often, and roller skated,
swam and played games.

I was "King Pin" of our gang, and they weren't the best of playmates. I
didn't say prayer as a child. I was christened in the Episcopal Church of
England.

As long as "Pop", my step-father, was alive we didn't want for anything. We
had fine horses and carriages and two servants. Pop gave us too much money to
spend for our own good.

I was an "A" number one student until my mama died. I was 10 and Mama's pet.
After she died I wouldn't go to school. I didn't have any home duties to do
and was jut let to run the streets and amuse myself.

"Pop" died when I was 14 and I was on my own from then on. Genevieve, my
oldest sister, ran the house. She took in five or six teachers as boarders
for a while and then went into nurse's training. Genevieve raised and
supported all of us.

Minnie and Edith took business courses and became stenographers. George
worked for a slate roofing company and lived at home while I went to work on a
farm. The man I worked for soon went into the painting and decorating
business and so did I.

One day when I was small I turned the neighbor's cows loose just for fun. My
brother, George, was going to tell so we fought and George picked up a rock,
threw it, and hit me in the back of the head. It hit so hard that it knocked
me out. George was so scared he ran five blocks for the doctor. In the
meantime, my sister Minnie carried me into the house and by the time the
doctor got there I was all right. From that day on George wouldn't raise a
hand to me no matter what I did to him. I took advantage of this many times.

I read all the favorite children's books. I liked to read and still do.

By the time I was fifteen I was working in Long Island in a bicycle and
handyman's shop, and delivered groceries on a hand cart, and worked in a
garage where I learned to be a mechanic.

At seventeen, I was private chauffeur for a doctor. I soon got the wander
lust and went to Florida where I worked as a chauffeur for a millionaire
lumberman for two years.

I was a chauffeur for a major in the signal corps during World War I. Most of
my duties were in Texas. After the army I came to LaGrande, Oregon, and
worked for the next fifteen years in the logging camps as a logging engineer.
While at a logging camp in 1915, I met my first wife, Edith Leslie. I was
twenty two, and she was sixteen when we were married.

We had five children. The first baby, George Herbert, lived only eight hours.
Edith was seventeen at the time and loosing her first baby was hard on her.

Geneveive Mary was born 14 August 1918; Arthur William was born 18 August
1920; Nadine Elizabeth was born 18 November 1922; and Robert Leslie was born 2
April 1925.

I bought the Texaco service station in Elgin, Oregon. I was in this business
only a short time when Edith passed away. She had an abcess in the brain and
suffered greatly.

Having been left with four children ages 11, 10, 7 and 5, I had to have a
housekeeper. There were several who were incompetent. I finally found one
who was satisfactory, but she took ill suddenly and had to have emergency
surgery, so her young widowed niece agreed to take over for her and hold the
job until she could come back. But,---while the lovely young widow and her
baby son, Billy, stayed, I fell in love with her many charms. Bernice was her
name and she lived a few blocks from my house with her mother and stepfather.
She came to work every morning at seven. I was always looking out the window
watching for her to come up the walk.

Finally I got up enough nerve to make permanent arrangements to keep her with
me all the time. We were married December 2, 1929. To this union eleven
children were born, making me the father of sixteen.

William (Billy) Walter Newell, being my wife's first child, and a baby at the
time of our marriage became my own in every way, except by blood ties.
Together we raised sixteen.

Herbert married Arvilla Bernice WANGSGARD on 2 Dec 1929 in Legrande. Oregon. Arvilla (daughter of Thomas "L" WANGSGARD and Barbara Louisa RACE) was born on 12 Mar 1907 in Mountain View, Wyoming; died on 21 Oct 1987 in Forest Grove, Washington, Oregon; was buried on 26 Oct 1987 in Yamhill, Carlton, Cemetery. This is the story told to me (Arvilla Rae Sanders Moore) one day in April
1961, by my Grandfather, Thomas Wangsgaard. He was born on February 28, 1884,
in Huntsville, Utah, to peter Christian Wangsgaard and Ingeborg Nielson.
He said, "I was known as "Little Tommy", because I was a sickly child. I
was the seventh child of a family of thirteen, five girls and eight boys.
At the age of seventeen I worked with cattle, for Hansen Livestock Co.,
riding and feeding.
When I was twenty-one I went to Wyoming to try farming. There I met and
married Barbara Race on May 8, 1906. Our daughter, Arvilla Bernice, was born
on March 12, 1907.
When little Bernice was just eight years old we were divorced. The court
granted Bernice to me.
Bernice and I moved to Utah where I met Annie Josephine Johnson and married
her June 21, 1915.
We had a daughter, Florence May, born to us April 21, ______, and two
little boys who died right after they were born.
I went to school in Huntsville, Utah. President David O.McKay was one of
my teachers. I've been to the McKay home many times and even courted David's
sister."

((I think it is interesting to note that Grandpa was baptized September 3,
1916. He and Annie were members of the church most of their married life
before they went to the temple on _____________ and Mother and Daddy went with
them. Mother was sealed to Grandpa and her stepmother.)

Life history written by Thomas L. Wangsgard on Sunday, 30 Aug 1953.
I was born Feb 28 - 1884 in Huntsville, Utah, the 7 child of P. C. and
Ingerborg Wangsgard. I went to school in Huntsville and worked on the farm
with my father. At the age of 17 I went to Logan and worked for the Hansen
live stock co., feeding cattle and tending cattle. At the age of 21 I went to
Wyoming, worked on ranches and coal mines also learned carpenter work. At the
age of 31 came to Ogden, worked in Packing plant (meat) for 1 year then got a
truck and was in express business for 3 years. At age 35 went to Nevada on
Homestead, was there 7 years. At age of 42 came back to Ogden and have done
carpenter work ever since. At this writing I am 69 years old and have 2
daughters and 14 grand children and 4 great grand children.

Thomas married Barbara Louisa RACE on 8 Mar 1906 in Mountainview, Uintah Co., Wyoming. Barbara (daughter of Joseph RACE and Melissa Louisa SEABERRY) was born on 29 Jul 1888 in Goshen, Millard Co., Utah; died on 4 Jul 1946 in Boise, Boise Co., Idaho; was buried in Ontario, Malheur, Oregon. BIOGRAPHY: Henry C. Blunck, was born, in Quarmbeck, near Kiel, Schleswig
Hollstein, Germany, the son of Claus Christian Blunck, and Anna Margarethe
Schlutter, August 25th, 1877. There were also in the family Dora, Wilhelmina,
and Martha.
The family soon after the birth of this only son moved to Kiel to live,
and it was there, that they accepted the church through the missionaries.
The parents jointed the church in 188___.
Henry was baptized May 15, 1889, by Louis M. Cannon.
The oldest sister, Dora, emigrated to Utah in the fall of 1889.
Henry came to Utah in 1891, and made his home with the O___ Horely family
in Forestdale, and later having worked for Will Hansen. During 1892
Wilhelmina came to Utah and she went to doing house work for the Charles
Wilkins family. The three worked and saved, and then the parents and sister
Martha came out in December of 1895.
The family then took residence on old 12th So. with an apartment of
Joseph Jensen.
In February 1896 the famly moved to near Rexburg, Idaho, to take over a
farm known as the Durrous and Winters ranch near the Snake River west of
Rexburg, Idaho, also later took over the Peter Fla___'s farm.
Later in the fall of 1898 they moved to Hibbard and took over the Fred
Ph__t farm for two years while he filled a m______.
During the spring of 1897, Henry went with Thomas Businger, of Salt Lake
, to Dillon, Montana and worked there as a cook in a mining camp.
Henry and his father filed on some land on Rexburg Bench, about twelve
miles southeast of Rexburg, and built a log cabin and began fencing the
property.
In the spring of 1901, the family moved to the cabin, and began clearing
sagebrush. They planted their first fall wheat in 1902 on twenty acres they
had prepared.
Henry worked for Thomas E. Ricks, for $25.00 per month plus bo. to get
some cash to get more equipment.
Wilhelmina married Joseph A. Johanson, and they and Henry went up near
____Warus River, in the Island Park Country to the Morgan Knapp Sawmill, to
chop logs, and thereby made another $75.00.
Henry married Hattie Staub October 2, 1903, in the Salt Lake Temple.
Moved into an apartment on 1st West, in Rexburg, being part of the house owned
by Robert H_________, Hattie's aunt and uncle.
During the winter of 1903-1904 Henry hauled hay and fed sheep for Fred
Park, of Hibbard $35.00 per month.
The spring of 1904 found Henry back on the farm clearing more sagebrush
and fencing, etc.
Henry purchased a lot in Rexburg and got a set of logs to build there.
In the fall of 1904, Joseph A. Johanson helped Henry build this log
house, with rock foundation, brick chimney, and transom over the door. (In
November 1904, Henry'a mother passed away.)
In this first modest home, was born their first son, George., February
26, 1905.
During the spring of 1905, Henry labored on the college administration
bldg. for $2.00 per day.
In June 1905, Joseph A. Johanson and Henry took a contract of cutting
logs, for Alma Hess, in the Island Park country.
In the fall of 1905 Henry came back to the farm and hauled firewood and
fence posts for use and sale to in turn get enough to buy groceries. Also
helped to build a one room school house for the new school district formed on
the Rexburg bench, known as Herbert.
Henry and Ezra Lillenquist and Joseph A. Johanson began conducting Sunday
School and Sacrament Meetings.
It was in the fall of 1905, that Grandfather Christen Bluck received
Patent rights on the first 160 acres of land.
November 6, 1906, Wm. H. Blunck, the second son was born, at Rexburg,
Idaho.
It was not too long after that before Henry filed on land for himself and
eventually built a log cabin on it, and it was there, that a third son, Leo C.
Blunck was born, January 4, 1909.
The Herbert Branch was organized, as an independent branch, January 9,
1910, with Henry C. Blunck, as President and James W. Archibald and Alexander
S. Lesthom, as counselors.
April 16th, 1910 Christian Blunck, sold his land to Robert and James
Leathom for $6,000.00.
Christian Blunck left for a mission to Germany, April 19, 1911.
October 4th, 1912, Henry got his final papers on his 160 acres of land.
Kenneth Edward Blunck was born July 1, 1911, Herbert, Idaho.
Rulon Detlef Blunck was born April 21, 1914, Herbert, Idaho.
Lula Mary Blunck, lst daughter, born in Rexburg, June 11, 1916.
Bought a home in Rexburg September 2, 1916, from Nephi Whittaker.
Viola May Blunck, 2nd daughter born in Rexberg May 9, 1923. Christian
Blunck came home from his mission in Germany, 14th July, 1913.
Robert and James Leathom, failed to pay for Christian Blunck's property,
so Henry purchased the 160 acres for $4,500.00, November 27, 1913.
During the winter of 1919-1920, Hattie Blunck, was stricken with a severe
case of flue, in which she almost lost her life, and in Janary a baby girl,
named Ruth was born, but died immediately afterwards. She was buried in the
Rexburg Cemetery January 25, 1920. The flu caused this we are sure.
George H. Blunck, the oldest son, left for a mission to Switzerland and
Germany, June 3rd, 1925, and after going to Salt Lake for instruction, left
June 16th for the -----
Another daughter was born, July 8, 1925, at Rexburg. Her name Erma
Geneve Blunck.
The Herbert Branch was dissolved and Henry was released on Sept 27, 1925.
He was sustained and ordained a Bishop of the Rexburg 4th Ward, by Melvin J.
Ballard, September 27, 1925.
Clause Christian Blunck passed away at the age of 75, 26th of March,
1926, at Salt Lake City.
Lavina Ruth Blunck, the youngest of this large family, was born August
15, 1927, at Rexburg.
George H. Blunck returned from a mission to Germany and Switzerland in
February, 1928.
George moved to Salt Lake shortly after coming home to seek employment.
Henry C. Blunck was relased as Bishop of Rexburg 4th Ward on Sept. 27,
1928. He was then sustained a member of the High Council for the Fremont and
later the Rexburg Stake. This job he did faithfuly fulfill for 16 years.
George married Rosa M. Sch_____, 3rd of October, 1928, at Salt Lake
Temple. They established their home in Salt Lake City.
Their children: Rose Bernice, born July 24, 1930.

Bernice married Roy Smith and have 4 children.
Marilyn married Earl Gilbert and they have 2 boys, all living in Salt
Lake City.
William H. Blunck married Lillian Galbraith, June 18, 19__ in the Salt
Lake Temple, but soon afterward divorced.
Leo C. Blunck, married Irene Gray, October 20, 1930, at Rigby, Idaho.
William H. Blunck filled a mission to East Central Stakes during
1933-1935. He married Ruth Henderson of Roanoke, Virginia, January 21, 1936,
Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in Rexburg, Idaho.

Hans married Hedwig (S) STRUSS on 2 Oct 1903 in Salt Lake City, S-Lk, UT. Hedwig (daughter of James HOWELLS and Sophie STRUSS) was born on 9 Mar 1887 in Solothurn, Brn, Swtz; died on 6 May 1935 in Rexburg, Mdsn, ID; was buried on 8 May 1935 in Rexburg Cemetery, Rexburg, Mdsn, ID.
